With this commitment to high quality workmanship, our artisans craft each Calvino from full grain, vegetable-tanned leather. Full gain refers the strongest layer of the cowhide which is the layer farthest away from the flesh. This ensures a close grain pattern which results in a durable and highly attractive leather. Our full grain leather is also taken from the saddleback where the fibres are tightest. This is in comparison to the leather from the lower portion of the cow which is poor quality. This is due to the looser fibres that make up the hide which can swell when wet and are often more marked and wrinkled. This means that our leather is as durable as possible in order to last throughout your career. From the strongest layer of the strongest part of the hide, our leather boasts undeniable quality which is crucial for a briefcase which will last you many more years to come.
In order to preserve the natural beauty of this leather it is vegetable-tanned. Honouring the traditional process of naturally tanning leather, we are proud members of the Genuine Italian Vegetable-Tanned Leather Consortium to protect and celebrate this environmentally-friendly process that has been passed down the generations. It is a way of life for so many in Tuscany. Dyes are extracted from bark including chestnut, quebracho and mimosa trees which results in a rich, warm finish. Consequently, vegetable-tanning is a thoughtful and long process that can take up to 40 days, highlighting the patience and skill behind our Classico leather. Moreover, as the leather is not chemically sealed, it will develop a stunning patina over time.
