jasper conran

In the lavish and pearly white surroundings of London’s iconic Claridge’s hotel, Jasper Conran showcased his AW17 collection to a doting crowd of his most loyal followers. A well-loved and highly experienced name on London Fashion Week’s schedule, you could say that Conran is the father of the LFW family. This season’s Jasper Conran woman owns an enviable wardrobe for the working woman living in the city. Relaxed, feminine tailoring is layered with raw finished leather camis. Pops of bright hues, such as blackcurrant and orange, lift these structured looks and give them a beautifully famine aesthetic. Pointed black leather brogues injected an androgynous edge.

simone rocha

In the heart of London’s west end, Simone Rocha displayed her AW17 collection within the ornate walls of Lancaster House. Delicate embroidery and sumptuous faux fur are juxtaposed with black hues and leather ‘seatbelt’ style belts for an edgier form of romanticism. Capturing an ethereal side to glamour, Rocha’s models walked the regally carpeted catwalk in swathes of bonded velvet in deep hues, monochrome chequered tweed and embroidered floral dresses, layered on top of gingham blouses. Showcasing an array of muses born from several different decades, Rocha helped to banish age discrimination in fashion with her liberal model choice. A feat that many designers have yet to tackle. Maybe this is the start of a mature model revolution?

In reality, most of the time, the expected is just as thrilling as the unexpected. With Margaret Howell, you have a very clear idea of what to expect at her shows. The inspiration is already known before the first Margaret model even steps foot onto the runway. Clean lines, utility aesthetics and muted tones are Howell’s signatures. Her name almost personifies the minimalism she portrays in her designs. AW17 is no exception. There were mac coats, bien sur, and her usual concoction of slouchy knitwear was placed over crisp white shirts to create a peekaboo effect. All in all, the audience walked out of the National Theatre yesterday after Margaret Howell’s show extremely satisfied with their latest dosage of minimal dressing.

topshop unique

If you were in your twenties during the Nineties, Topshop’s AW17 collection is going to give you serious déjà vu. A front row decorated with a sprinkle of fashion’s A crowd, from Leandra Medine to Olivia Palermo, the show commenced with a musical throwback to the electronic 1999 sounds of Moby. Kate Moss’ little sister, Lottie Moss, pounded down the catwalk in another ode to the iconic decade. This season’s Topshop girl left her job in the city behind in search for freedom and adventure. As her mind awakens to her newfound free spirit, she experiments with her style as she travels around the world. Think fawn and floral pink silks, rave-ready graphic sweaters and slinky backless dresses with a hint of glitter – ideal for those Hacienda nights in Ibiza’s new town.

pringle of scotland

Championing their Gaelic identity combined with innovative knitwear, Pringle of Scotland’s AW17 collection showcased a contemporary blend of printed techniques and the ancient tradition of feileadh-mor. The name given to the Highland technique of swaddling your body in heavy fabrics fastened with a large kilt pin, silhouettes were draped and loose, conjuring up visions of the excess fabric created from this method of dressing. Signature tartan accents created fluidity, injecting an element of Pringle’s Scottish DNA that is never ignored. For this fashion house, the key to their success will forever be a finely tuned heritage and a seriously advanced knitted jumper.
