London Fashion Week AW17 | Street Style Report

The style of London Fashion Week’s attendees was as defiant as the fur protesters’ chants outside the Store Studios, this weekend. Fashion week requires attitude, and London always delivers this in bucket loads. On Saturday, however, one had to cross the Thames to seek out the hottest street style. Magnetizing fashion’s A-est of A crowds, Topshop Unique’s attendees strode into the Tate on Saturday in a flash of neon hues, lavish textures, and outgoing prints to rival some of Bowie’s most daring get-ups. If you’re looking to step out of your sartorial comfort zone, read on to discover the latest London Fashion Week street style trends…

bright tailored coats

It seems the most effective way to make a statement against London’s grey backdrops is to drape a boldly hued coat over your shoulders. Whether you opt for fuschia or mustard, a brightly shaded coat should be finely tailored to balance out the vivid colour. If you’re not at Fashion Week, however, the draping-over-shoulders part may prove to be slightly impractical.

avant-garde florals

As Spring begins to peak through the proverbial weather curtain, fashionistas everywhere are turning to this season’s trend floral. Embroidered or laser printed onto silk and taffeta, these classic florals look ultra modern mixed with light wash denim. Boasting oriental accents, this lavish take on the floral trend is the ideal way to freshen up your Spring wardrobe.

patent leather

Sofia Richie and Chelsea Leylend lead the way for a grungier look outside Topshop Unique, last weekend, with patent leather. A dimensional fabric adding a high-fashion aesthetic to any look, this trend is certainly one for the brave hearted. Mix with classic hues, such as black and red, to keep this shiny leather under control. If you want your outfit to make an impact, patent leather is a highly noted trend, this Spring/Summer – toughen up and embrace the shine.

primary hues

An art-deco inspired trend advocated by blogger royalty such as Amelia Liana and Lydia Millen (centre), dots of primary colours were spotted all over London for Fashion Week, this season. Red, blue, green or yellow, London’s stylish elite are opting to make a statement by teaming their ensembles with a boldly shaded piece. Whether it’s a handbag or a knitted sweater, you can wear your primary-hued item with sartorial pride, this Spring.

teddy bear fur

As the temperatures in London remain chilly, last Autumn/Winter’s ultimate coat crush is still going strong in February. Spotted outside London’s Tate museum during LFW last week, fashion’s influencers, including Tallia Storm (left) opted for a teddy bear fur coat to keep the cold out. Adding texture to your outfit, lighten this heavy fabric up as Spring approaches and opt for a pastel shade in dusty pink or mint. Also note, a prominent lapel is a must for this trend coat.

crushed velvet skirts

This lightweight and textured fabric is ideal for transitioning into Spring. Seen outside Topshop Unique’s AW17 show in the form of a midi length skirt in golden and green tones, crushed velvet injects a luxurious element into your casual ensembles effortlessly. If you’re feeling confident to show a section of your pins again after a long Winter, this trend is a surefire way to ease your way back into Spring dressing.

oyster pink

Pink isn’t shying away just yet. Dubbed the colour of the year, this feminine hue has experienced an almighty revival recently. From electric pink to sherbert pink, fashion’s A crowd have been choosing this tickled shade as a way to keep their style up-to-date. At this week’s London Fashion Week, members of the Pink Lady crew were spotted here, there, and everywhere, opting for a more subtle, baby pink tone in head-to-toe ensembles or structured outerwear. Whether you’re girly or not, this of-the-moment hue is bound to lift your style spirits.

sixties accents

Fashion’s circle of life may be rather volatile, but there are key trends from certain eras that will always be timeless. Sixties nostalgia was spotted as guests left the Tate show space on Sunday in the form of bright white cat-eye shades, jazzy, bright fabrics, and cute collared jackets. A look that is individually steered rather than trend-driven, you may have to tap into your inner retro persona to pull off this evocative trend. Don’t go too extreme, however. You don’t want to risk looking like you’re heading to a fancy dress party, do you?

frill details

Frilled hems, frilled sleeves, frilled collars – last year was dominated by frilly details. A romantic embellishment used to feminize dresses and skirts into sometimes rather ostentatious boundaries, this flamboyant trend is solely for the dreamers. Seen at LFW on velvet and patterned numbers, it looks like frills are here to stay, this Summer. If you’re new to this trend, take your first step to frilly-ness with a floaty sleeved blouse.

textured plaid

If you’re clinging onto the wintry months as you just love to layer up warm, it seems like you’re not alone. LFW attendees, including British Fashion Council’s CEO Caroline Rush, were spotted donning their woollen plaid coats to keep the chilly air at bay. Oversized or cropped, this patterned coat trend is still going strong, despite Spring lurking around the corner. Take note: gingham will also be a key print for Spring. Get a few more wears out of your favourite winter coat this season and layer with a lightweight cotton polo neck underneath.
