Maxwell Scott Charity: How We Helped The World In 2016

The importance of giving runs through the heart of Maxwell Scott. As a family business, giving back to others feels organic. Unfortunately, once the act of care is overridden in any circumstance, the beauty and magic tends to fade. Founder, William, believes that care is one of the most vital traits he needs to maintain an honest Maxwell Scott. From caring about his Italian artisans in Tuscany, to caring about his customers’ opinions, to caring about the world around him. Read about our Maxwell Scott charity projects in 2016 below, and discover the stories behind them.

maxwell scott charity project #1: st joseph vocational training centre, tanzania

Situated at the foot of Mount Kilimanjaro, this inspirational centre offers valuable vocational skills to young men and women who are seeking to carve a career. Enhancing their school experience, VTC offers these young people the opportunity to gain experience in a vocation that will give them a decent living – something this Tanzanian generation is striving for. The courses range from mechanics to computing and air-conditioning to secretarial. We believe that it’s important for any young person to achieve their goals and is given the chance to make a difference in the world.

After hearing that the centre’s football team were lacking in the kit department, we kitted them out with full strips of their favourite team,

Manchester United.

Even just a small gesture like this grew into something much greater. After receiving photographs of the young Tanzanian team in their new kit, it was clear that our kits had helped to enhance their togetherness. Feeling like they were a part of something meant the world to them.

Although we seem to have accumulated an office full of Liverpool FC supporters, our newfound relationship with Maxwell Scott and the VTC’s football team decked out in Manchester united gear because of an action we made felt incredibly rewarding. The moral of this story? A small gesture from you can make a huge difference to someone else.

maxwell scott charity project #2: place2be, uk

Place2Be has supported children’s mental health for over two decades. This inspirational charity offers mental health support to over 116,000 children in 282 schools in the UK. Their main mission is to enhance the prospects and wellbeing of our children by offering counselling and support within schools. It is becoming more evident than ever that mental health is a huge problem. Tackling the issue whilst young leads to a healthier future for the next generation.

This life-changing charity gives support to help children cope with a range of issues, whether that’s bereavement, domestic violence, neglect, bullying, family trauma – the list is endless. As a family-run business, we believed that supporting a children’s mental health charity would carry heavier relevance. In June 2016, we initiated a partnership with Place2be, giving £1 for every bag we sold for the whole month.

We raised just over £500. Our donation gave 70 children the opportunity to Place2Be’s counselling services. We gave 70 children in need a safe place for them to talk about their problems. This was undoubtedly one of Maxwell Scott’s proudest moments, this year.

maxwell scott charity project #3: friends of kagando, uganda

That's Jules in the pink jumpsuit!

Julia Miller is our Ecommerce Marketing Executive. She is also, however, a bit of a thrill-seeker. Inspired by her mother, Rita Miller, who spends half of her year working at Kagando hospital in Uganda, she recently took to the skies (15,000 feet to be exact) to jump out of a plane to raise money for Friends of Kagando. A charity close to her family’s heart, the organisation aims to send vital equipment and provide skilled expertise for staff at Kagando hospital.

Julia’s skydive at the North London Skydiving Centre raised funds so that incredible individuals like her mother Rita, a retired nurse practitioner, are able to support Kagando hospital’s development. With the Friends of Kagando charity, Rita and others aim to improve the country’s healthcare system to offer every Ugandan the right to skilled care at the hospital. We are beyond proud of Julia’s commitment to such a worthy cause. Well done, Jules! The MSB team salute you.
