Caring for your luxury leather

Leather Care
We insist on sourcing the very finest hides available from the highly respected Italian Consortium of Leather Tanners. These hides have been specifically picked due to their longevity, durability and stunning looks. All creases and marks are natural characteristics and the specific reason we chose these beautiful natural hides. Our leather products are designed to last substantially longer than most, and will grow old gracefully gaining character and distinct worn personalities. Leather care for Maxwell Scott products is relatively easy but you need to follow a set of simple rules. Our leathers can be restored, but annual maintenance is advisable. If cared for properly, Maxwell Scott bags will last and stay in good shape for a lifetime. However, these bags will still last for many years without any care, so do not worry!
Cleaning
Maxwell Scott leather is extremely robust and should age beautifully. However, if you want to clean the bag, lukewarm water and a mild soap are the best options available. Do not get carried away with expensive cleaners and conditioners, simple natural waxes are often the best way to condition the hide i.e. bees wax. In fact, any harsh chemicals can damage the leather, so never use household cleaners or products containing alcohol. Keep the exterior leather away from makeup, food, or any other oil based product which can stain. In no circumstances should you try washing your bag in the washing machine or tumble dryer. Although we have tested this method with amazing success, we do not want you to damage your washing machine. All liquid stains should be dealt with quickly, and blotted gently with a clean, dry cloth. Never forget, leather is a skin, and should be cared for in a similar way to your own.
Rain
Maxwell Scott leather bags should not be kept in the rain for long periods of time. If the bag becomes wet, wiping away excess moisture and then leave to dry naturally. Do not attempt to dry with a direct heat source e.g. fire, radiator or hair dryer. At Maxwell Scott, we only use full and top grain leather for our luxury leather bags. This is the outer layer of the hide which is more durable compared to split or lower grade leather. Maxwell Scott leather is supple, and consistent in colour, and its natural surface is smoother showing the full characteristics of the skin. This will allow the rain to absorb much slower. Lower grade leather is blotchy and very inconsistent in colour. The surface can often be very glossy, partly from the excessive coating needed to hide imperfections. Rain will often absorb much quicker and create problems further down the line.
