London Fashion Week Men’s | Trends To Note For 2018

Embracing its emerging status within the fashion calendar, London Fashion Week Men’s returned this weekend. A celebration of creative diversity within the industry, London has now solidified itself as the international hub for menswear. Here, we review the unfolding trends seen on the Big Smoke’s streets during LFWM…

The Shelby Effect

Chelsea’s golden boy, Oliver Proudlock, took inspiration from Birmingham’s Shelby brothers in a Joshua Kane bespoke marl grey tweed three-piece, this weekend. One could have easily mistaken him for an extra in Peaky Blinders if it wasn’t for the black Mercedes Benz he arrived in. The British TV series’ lead man Thomas Shelby (played by Cillian Murphy) has become an iconic figure of late, known for his hardy demeanor and impeccably sharp tailoring. Mr Proudlock finished off his Victorian-inspired look with a signature tweed flat cap, black Oxfords, and a camel cashmere scarf. His style plays as a reminder of how fashion is persistently intertwined with popular culture.

Ochre Tones
London Fashion Week Men's
This vibrant yet earthy hue is the emerging shade to invest in for 2018.  Here, LFWM regular Darren Kennedy dons an ochre corduroy jacket by Savile Row brand Richard James outside the Christopher Raeburn show, this weekend. Also noted at the Oliver Spencer AW18 show on Saturday, this vivid yellow tone was showcased in the form of fine corduroy separates. As Kennedy proved in London this weekend, it’s key to blend ochre with more natural shades and textures. Layer with deep burnt orange suede, light denim and classic cotton to nail the colour of the year.

The Italian Way

Italy’s carefree ‘sprezzatura’ attitude is entirely contrasted with Britain’s traditional mindset when it comes to men’s style. Italian gentlemen have, for centuries, been completely at ease with the notion of carrying a leather clutch with their newspaper when heading out for an espresso at the weekend. A simple and elegant way to store your essentials, the leather pouch trend has spread eastwards towards Blighty. As a fashion capital, London has begun to celebrate the unique as well as the classic within men’s style. Our Santino S clutch bag offers an ideal blend of revolutionary shapes and timeless leather.

Ahoy Sailor

Sunday was frosty with clear blue skies – the perfect day for a long-length wool coat. International actor and model Eric Rutherford emerged from a black cab in a spectacular military coat outside the BFC show space. With an exaggerated peak lapelled collar and double-breasted gold buttons, the rest of Rutherford’s style was deliberately dark and muted to let the coat do the talking. This effortless naval style was mirrored by another LFWM attendee in the form of an oversized sailor-inspired trouser with a wide upturned hem. In 2018, take reference from our naval history for a classic and sophisticated aesthetic.

The Great Outdoors
Crafted for adventurers and explorers, the hiking boot was seen on the feet of many London Fashion Week Men’s regulars, this weekend – Oliver Proudlock and Darren Kennedy to name a few. The sporty version of a rocker biker boot, this trending footwear option offers a fresh outlook on casual style. From the street style we captured this weekend, it appears that this hiking boot hype should be toughened up further with a leather jacket. To fully execute this look, pair with a wool rollneck and a tailored trouser for an outdoors-indoors sartorial fusion.

Sheepskin Coats
London Fashion Week Men's
The shearling trend has been a firm favourite within the menwear industry for several seasons, shedding its ‘delboy’ connotations more and more every year. Not only is a sheepskin coat incredibly practical during Autumn/Winter, it offers a classic and more casual alternative if you’re bored of your everyday tailored piece. This year’s shearling coat has been spruced up slightly, with double-breast buttons and longer lengths taking precedence over the shorter bomber styles of 2017. Wear with baker boy hats, slim denim jeans and Chelsea boots for an effortless way to style yourself on weekends.
