How Meghan Markle’s Crossbody Bag Is Revolutionising Royal Protocol

During Prince Harry and his fiancé Meghan Markle’s royal visit to Scotland on Tuesday, the American actress surprisingly raised eyebrows with, of all things, her choice of handbag. Arriving in Edinburgh in a navy and green tartan Burberry coat, Markle accompanied her suitably Scottish look with a leather crossbody bag. Draped across her torso leaving both hands free for well wisher handshakes, the forest green bag proved to be an incredibly practical choice. However, more importantly, it was a choice that was declared a complete first for the British royal family. With The Queen iconically known for always carrying her handbag in the crook of her arm and the Duchess of Cambridge preferring clutches, Meghan’s crossbody option came as quite the sartorial shock. Although it doesn’t necessarily break royal protocol, most people see it as a rather progressive and revolutionary move to make for the woman about to wed our youngest Prince.

Although Miss Markle’s crossbody has come under scrutiny by some royalists, it once again proves how our female royal figures develop such a powerful voice through their style choices. Akin to first lady fashion, it is inevitably criticised and noted as a form of their expression and symbolisation. Markle’s crossbody bag portrays her as a woman who will always be herself before any of the royal names she is about to take on. Establishing this early within her royal journey is indeed a clever idea. Unlike Kate, she will never be Queen. Abiding by royal protocol and maintaining an air of regality in public is far less important to Meghan and Harry. They see their royal positions more as humanitarian roles rather than an opportunity to keep the monarchy’s traditions alive.

As she waved at the Scottish crowds with the crossbody swinging by her side, Meghan Markle laughed and chatted with the individuals introduced to her. Graced with a warm smile and large doe-like eyes, her appeal is somewhat similar to the late Lady Diana. Like her, it seems that Markle isn’t afraid to step away from tradition and do things her own way. Hit by a case of the ‘Meghan Effect’, this crossbody bag, made by a Scottish leather brand, sold out just hours after – a testament to the draw she has initiated with the fashion crowd.
