The NYFW AW19 Trends To Wear Straight Away

Here is how to stay ahead of the curve and incorporate the latest NYFW AW19 trends into your wardrobe now…

70s Pattern Clashing

The inspiration for the Tory Burch show was Black Mountain College, an incredibly influential liberal arts college which operated from 1933 to 1957.  Of the college Burch said:

“I’ve always been obsessed. It really formed the trajectory of modern art in America. But what I loved about it was its progressive attitude. It wasn’t about gender or race. It was about sheer creativity and the confluence of all these different artists coming together. It’s where modern thinking should be today.”

This eccentric eclecticism was evident across other shows, such as Longchamp and Kate Spade, which also explored clashing prints. It was this free approach to print that was reminiscent of the 70s, alongside the choice of rich colours and knee-high boots. As such, the looks were playful and expressive.

There are three key rules to mixing prints to remember when incorporating this trend into your wardrobe. These are: mix tonal prints with a single colour as the foundation, marry delicate patterns with bolder ones and finish the look with solid, minimalist accessories. Nonetheless it is most essential to simply be brave and experiment.

From the explosion of prints to the simplicity of tailoring, a more glamorous take on the traditional tailoring trend took to the catwalk this season. In Ralph’s Café on Madison Avenue, Ralph Lauren presented a shoppable SS19 collection steeped in decadence. Bella Hadid’s slinky gold dress was the headline act, however Lauren executed perfect tailoring. In a sleek monochrome and gold colour palette, this collection oozed old-school sophistication. Likewise, Tom Ford decided this season to focus on easy dressing whilst maintaining the impact of his more excessive looks of previous seasons. It was in his search for calm that he found tailoring – a mainstay of his brand. This season though Ford opted for luscious colours and rich velvets to highlight the beauty of his tailoring. To wear this trend now, simply choose a silky feminine suit to be worn with a boot during the day and an elegant heel come dusk.

Ruffles

Perhaps the most dramatic trend to emerge from NYFW AW19 is ruffles. Whether that be Victoriana delicate ruffles at Longchamp or vibrant bold ruffles at Prabal Gurung, ruffles made a statement. The home of the ruffle, Brock Collection, presented a show which particularly embodies this trend. Alongside soft tailoring and mix-and-match separates, there were tiered dresses which bought “raw romance” into daywear as the Brocks deem it. Ruffled skirt hems and Tudor-esque necklines were also present to highlight the many ways that this look can be incorporated in your wardrobe. However, to ease into this trend, ruffles should be worn as evening attire – when a little drama is always necessary. A skirt with a waterfall ruffle for example will always be flattering and should be paired with a blouse and classic, minimal accessories. If the blouse boasts a romantic sleeve as well all the better.

Thick Knits

Tibi Founder Amy Smilovic designs clothes to be cherished and kept forever – a sentiment close to our heart at Maxwell-Scott. A thick knit, always a wardrobe staple, was then understandably present in her collection. This season, Smilovic offered long-over-long sweaters which were worn with pencil skirts and classic knee-high boots for a less literal take on ladylike dressing. Tory Burch featured thick knits too, this time with a more collegiate feel. In fact, she paired funnel neck jumpers with check trousers and loafers. To incorporate this trend into your wardrobe then, as we edge towards spring, a cropped trouser and traditional loafer is best. The classic design of the whole outfit after all means that these clothes will be cherished forever. Finally, finish the look with the Fiorella Italian leather business handbag handcrafted by skilled artisans in the heart of Italy to last a career.

Utility Leather

Leather emerged as a strong trend throughout the NYFW AW19 shows. This season though, there was a utility edge to leather looks. Longchamp for instance featured a faux croc leather boiler suit with a soft blouse and petite handbag whereas Tibi belted a masculine leather shirt. Such a modern take on leather was always paired with a waist-cinching belt and ladylike handbag. As such, for now, add leather to your weekend wardrobe to aptly reflect the more relaxed nature of the trend. A pair of leather culottes are best worn with tonal knitwear so that the difference in textures shines. Moreover, mixing leathers is more modern. Therefore, pair a caramel pair of culottes with sleek black accessories such as a pair of ankle boots and the Lucca crossbody bag for a contemporary, casual leather look.
