We offer a 25-year guarantee on all of our briefcases. This is because we are unique in our commitment to quality and crafting only the very finest, most durable pieces. Each case is handmade from the finest vegetable-tanned Italian leather by skilled artisans in the heart of Tuscany. It is, therefore, our responsibility to repair any manufacturing faults on zips, clasps, stitching or otherwise.

From the very beginning, our founder and CEO William Forshaw pledged to provide this industry-leading warranty to reflect the quality of our briefcases. He was focused on providing his customer with nothing but the absolute best. Thus, our 25-year warranty is an honest reflection of our dedication to advocating craftsmanship and slow, sustainable fashion.

Please note that we do not cover any damage caused to an item by personal misuse or due to fair wear and tear over the natural life of your purchase. Our repair team, however, is happy to mend the item for a fee if this is the case.

We source our western cowhides from the Santa Croce sull’Arno region of Tuscany - a world-renowned area for producing high-quality leather that stands the test of time. Consequently, we only use vegetable-tanned full grain leather. Full grain leather is considered the finest quality as it made from the strongest part of the hide. This is significant because this ensures durability and an attractive quality due to the close grain pattern.

Our leather is then vegetable-tanned. This natural process uses dyes extracted from bark extracts including chestnut, quebracho and mimosa trees and results in a rich, warm finish. This process takes up to forty days and is rooted in a tradition which has been passed down through families over centuries. It is still a way of life for many in Tuscany. Importantly, no toxic chemicals are used throughout the process which can then enter waterways. This also means that over time the leather will develop a unique patina. A highly desirable sheen cultivated through use and exposure, patina is a hallmark of the highest-quality leather.

Moreover, our full grain leather is available in three different finishes: Classico, Croco and Soft Grain.

Classico is our signature leather, ideal for the gentleman with traditional taste.

Croco means our faux croc finish. Here, our classic full grain leather is heat-embossed to reveal a crocodile print. It is a contemporary twist for the gentleman with a unique aesthetic.

Soft Grain is our most modern option. This butter-soft leather has a matte finish which makes it perfect for the gentleman with a more relaxed look.

Our family-run factory is based in the heart of Italy. After all, the traditional leather industry has been in Tuscany for centuries. This means that our skilled artisans possess a wealth of knowledge and experience. In fact Domenico, the head of the family, has been involved in the leather industry for nearly 75 five years. He has passed this commitment to his craft to those who surround him which means that the factory consistently strives for the very best. Our artisans are foundational to Maxwell-Scott, with our 25-year warranty testament to their skill.
We know that a luxury leather briefcase is one of the most important work wardrobe investments that a man will make. A smart style statement, a Maxwell - Scott handmade briefcase is a practical classic that will become a trusted work companion. As a result, each briefcase is designed with functionality in mind. Our range includes many styles which will adapt to your specific needs. For instance, the Volterra laptop briefcase has a padded compartment with straps to secure your tech whilst the Alanzo features external umbrella straps. One of our most versatile briefcases, however, is the Micheli backpack briefcase which boasts adjustable straps so that the briefcase can be worn on your back or by your side. The majority of our briefcases are also accompanied by a detachable, adjustable shoulder strap to easily support the weight of the bag.

This focus on practicality is evident through the evolution of the Paolo3 classic briefcase. This was the first briefcase that our founder and CEO William designed. Since then, the design has been refined in order to fulfil the needs of the modern businessman. An example of which is changing the lock to the incredibly durable Alce lock. As a matter of fact, it is only the leather and the production methods that have remained the same. This demonstrates our dedication to always providing the most practical design that maintains a classic British aesthetic.

As part of our belief that the right briefcase can last you your entire career, it is essential to choose the perfect briefcase to you. There are four key aspects to consider.

1. Size

First, it is important to think about the amount that you will want to transport every day to and from the office. This will allow you to make a decision between large briefcases like the 3-sectioned Tomacelli which can accommodate a 17” laptop, A4 files and an iPad/tablet or a slimmer design. An example of this would be the Lorenzo which has a single compartment for a slimline 13" laptop and thin notebook. It is simply a case of what will suit you best on a daily basis.

2. Function

Part of the issue regarding the size of your perfect briefcase depends on the function you require it to perform. If you need to carefully transport a laptop daily then it is necessary to choose a briefcase with a padded section. Or if you are a frequent flyer then the Varese with wheels may be more appropriate.

3. Style

A formal workplace requires a smart, professional briefcase like the classic Buroni attaché case, whereas, in a more casual setting, a leather business satchel such as the Ravenna may be more appropriate.

Likewise, the leather colour is crucial here. For instance dark chocolate brown and chestnut tan leathers match perfectly with navy or blue suits whilst black complements grey and, of course, looks smart with a more traditional black suit.

4. Profession

For a specialised profession, a more specific case may be required. For example for a lawyer, the Basilio executive briefcase is ideal for transporting documents or a doctor may prefer the Donnini Large leather medical briefcase.

Maxwell-Scott was founded by Harrogate-born William Scott Forshaw in 2002 with the focus to create briefcases to last an entire career. This was in order to act as the epitome of fine Italian artistry combined with timeless British design and an antidote to the fast fashion industry.

William searched tirelessly for the right factory, finally settling on a family-run factory in the heart of Tuscany. Here, in Italy’s traditional leather industry, the Maxwell-Scott artisans now handcraft each briefcase. Their knowledge and workmanship form the crucial foundation to Maxwell-Scott. In fact, each piece has a guarantee, an absolute imperative for William as he designs accessories to last a lifetime. This is both a testament to slow consumerism and follows his desire to create pieces which can be passed from generation to generation.

Over the years we have formed deep connections with our customers, continually striving to provide the best in terms of purchase and customer service. Ultimately, the primary aim at Maxwell-Scott is to serve the customer and uphold the heritage of Italian leather industries.
