What is soft grain leather?
Soft Grain leather is full-grain, vegetable-tanned leather, with an Aniline finish that creates a beautiful two-tone effect, as well as transparency and depth in the leather. The leather has been specially selected for its luxuriously soft, flexible feel and its natural grain texture. Our leather is sourced from a tannery within the top 1.5% of tanneries supplying vegetable-tanned leather in Italy, awarded the Italian Vegetable-tanned Leather Consortium Quality Trademark & Guarantee. It offers durability due to its incredible strength, whilst the soft handle feel creates a sophisticated and stylish appearance. Soft Grain leather retains the natural grain and markings of the hide, offering a unique, authentic look that gains character and patina with age.
How is soft grain leather different to our Signature full-grain leather?
Our soft grain leather, although also full-grain, is typically more buttery and smooth to the touch as a result of its finishing. This makes it a refined choice for luxury accessories that exude comfort and elegance. It has an Aniline finish that sets it apart, offering a deep two-tone effect and a soft, smooth feel. Because the natural characteristics of the hide are visible, only the highest-quality leather is suitable for this method of finishing. The leather is more breathable and develops a natural patina over time, which makes the leather look better as it ages. It is often used for all kinds of luxury items and is valued for its softness, natural appearance and ability to age gracefully.
How is soft grain leather made?
Our soft grain leather is made from high-quality French bovine shoulders and is exclusively tanned in Italy using organic methods. It is a leather tanned entirely with vegetables using natural tannins such as Quebracho extract, which gives a specific softness and compactness to the leather.
It is then dyed in the barrel and presents itself with a beautiful texture given by the natural grain obtained through the several hours of barrel-dyeing of the leather. The leather is then finished with these aniline colours that give a beautiful two-tone effect, transparency and depth to the leather.
Finally, it is greased with oils and a special fat called “Tallow”, a mixture of natural oils and fats according to an ancient recipe from our tannery. This grease gives excellent consistency and elasticity to the leather and a soft and warm hand. The Tallow used by our skilled artisans is always a by-product of the meat industry, as we continue to focus our efforts on sustainable practices. Tallow is a traditional and effective conditioner for leather, helping to soften, protect, and preserve the leather by replenishing natural oils and preventing cracking. It keeps the leather supple, helping to extend the lifespan of the leather.
The process takes time, generations of knowledge and skill to complete – it’s what sets apart our beautiful soft grain leather from the rest.
What are the benefits of soft grain leather?

How to care for soft grain leather?
Due to the luxury, high-quality nature of our leather, it only improves with age. You’ll find that when exposed to the elements, your leather accessory will develop a unique patina over time. You won’t need any special products to keep our soft-grain leather looking its best: simply dust off any loose debris with a dry cloth. If you’d like to give your accessory some extra TLC, we’d recommend using our Maxwell-Scott leather balm. Made from 100% natural ingredients, including locally sourced beeswax, it will protect and rejuvenate your leather bag or accessory. For more stubborn stains, you can always contact us for some specialised advice on the best care for your leather.
There are a few things to avoid when taking care of this leather to maintain its integrity. For example, try not to get your leather accessory wet. If you do get caught in the rain, gently blot away any drops of water and let your bag dry naturally. Do not place your bag next to a radiator or attempt to dry it with a hair dryer. We don’t recommend using chemical cleaners and conditioners, as they can damage the surface of your leather bag or small accessory, causing more harm than good.
Breathable dust bags are the ideal storage companion if you choose not to use your Italian leather bag for a prolonged period. Not only will this protect your bag from dust, but it’ll also prevent its eventual discolouration due to sunlight.
