The History of our Italian Atelier
Born from a commitment and determination to discover the world’s finest quality leather, Maxwell-Scott was ignited from a vision of a forever briefcase. Businessman William Forshaw noticed a lack of high-quality leather briefcases on the market, watching his colleagues rotate high street bags prone to wear and tear. William’s search for the highest quality leathers possible led him on a several-year-long journey, where he would finally meet Orazio: Italy’s most dedicated and passionate leather craftsman. It’s in the heart of Tuscany, alongside Orazio and his family-run factory, where the first ever Maxwell-Scott product came to life: The Paolo briefcase.
Together, William and Orazio shared values of superior quality, timeless style and authentic durability. The original Paolo briefcase soon became a renowned success, well-known for its unmistakable design and incredible ‘forever’ quality. Remaining a best seller to this day, The Paolo has since been reimagined with progressive features to accommodate the modern businessman, such as premium hardware, strap adjustments for comfort and interior panels. New additions to the collection also allow you to choose the perfect fit for your lifestyle; The Paolo Large, for example, is the perfect everyday accomplice for businessmen with a laptop up to 17”.

Leather
William’s pursuit of exceptional quality led to the discovery of our signature ‘Vachetta leather’ – the purest and most coveted type of leather in the world. You’ll find The Paolo Large is handcrafted by the very same leather today (along with the majority of Maxwell-Scotts products, of course). Our signature leather is always sustainably sourced, choosing the finest full grain leather renowned for its premium quality and resilience.
The unmistakable Chestnut Tan shade is a timeless choice, achieved by honouring a centuries-old sustainable method. Chestnuts and bark from a chestnut tree are ground into a fine powder and soaked into fine-quality hides. The process takes two months, in contrast to chemical tanning, which takes two days – a process that Maxwell-Scott will never use. It’s a breath of fresh air compared to the typical antics of the fashion industry, where fastness and corner-cutting lead to throwaway items.

Touches
Continuing the determination to source only the highest quality materials, each and every finishing touch promises long-lasting functionality. The Paolo Large features an Alce, cast mixed alloy lock, which is highly regarded within the industry as durable and almost indestructible. The specially selected brushed mixed alloy style has anti-rust and anti-corrosive properties, giving you peace of mind that your belongings are safe and secure – a truly priceless feeling, especially when it comes to your professional belongings. To complement this, the two zipped compartments follow suit, complete with hand-finished YKK zips – the best on the market, of course. The finishing touches deserve just as much attention as the leather we use to craft our accessories, as each and every element marries together to create a product that will last you a lifetime.

At Maxwell-Scott, we believe that what’s on the inside counts, too. The Paolo Large has a leather interior to offer a hard-wearing, durable and strong finish. Every material used for our products is carefully considered and researched, in terms of both the experience for the wearer and the environment. We’re proud to say our craftsmen are able to use the dermis part of our vegetable-tanned cow leather, reducing waste and, in turn, offering a more sustainable lining option. Ready to take on your daily commute with your belongings cleverly assembled, there are three spacious compartments including a padded central section to accommodate a 17” laptop with extra protection. The leather interior has been carefully selected within the design process of The Paolo Large, to ensure this often-used briefcase can withstand the test of time whilst looking effortlessly smart.
