Lessons We’ve Learned From Our Mothers

To honour International Women’s Day this year, the Maxwell-Scott team share what they have learned from the leading women in their lives – their mothers…

Nicole, PR Manager
International Womens Day 2019

Strength:

Life can be tough but my mum has shown me that you can find the strength in yourself to get through even the most challenging of times.

Consideration:

My mum has taught me that you should never judge a person quickly as you don’t know what struggles they are going through at the moment.

Caring:

Being a really caring person herself, my mum has shown me the importance of caring about your family and friends and going the extra mile for them.

Self-confidence:

My mum has been my biggest fan from the beginning. She was the one cheering the loudest for every theatre play, graduation or professional achievement. Her support made me the confident person I am today.

Listening:

Finally my mum has taught me the importance of lending an ear and simply listening – not with the intent to reply but with the intent to understand.

Independence:

I think my mum’s biggest parental goal was to raise me to become an independent person. She’s always taught me the importance of self-reliance and to live within my means.

Discipline:

My mum always instilled the faith in me that when you work hard you can achieve anything you want. However, not in a fairytale kind of way but through discipline, sacrifice, taking constructive criticism on board and always believing in myself.

Intuition:

Always trust your gut. It knows what your head hasn’t figured out yet.

Self-acceptance:

Self-acceptance is something my mum is still teaching me every day. Keep the focus on yourself and your own goals instead of comparing yourself to others. Once I learned the importance of believing in myself and just being myself it gave even more value to the things around me.

Balance:

My mum always taught me that it is important to have a healthy balance in all things in life. All things in moderation.

Be Yourself :

My mum has always taught me not to care what any one else thinks or says about you. As long as you are happy with the person you are then everything else will just bounce off.

Independence:

I have always aspired to be as strong and independent as my mother.

Ability to Adapt:

No matter what life throws your way, my mother has always been able to adapt and take on what ever comes her way.

Have fun:

She is always the life of the party, her laugh is always the loudest in the room. No matter where she is, she always finds a way to have a great time.

The Importance of Family:

My mother has always said that, no matter how annoying, family is everything. At the end of the day, they will always be there for you and I will always be there for them.

Optimism:

My mum has always taught me that you can find something everyday which is positive. There is always a reason to smile or a moment that will make you laugh.

Kindness:

Perhaps one of the kindest people I know, my mum has taught me the importance of being thoughtful.

Selflessness:

Through the many years that we have dealt with my illnesses together, my mum has been nothing but selfless. She has supported me so much, I will never be able to thank her enough. Hopefully one day I will manage to be half as selfless as she is.

Perseverance:

Likewise, through it all, my mum has proved her strength and tenacity. I take great courage from this foundation that she has given me.

Acknowledgement:

Lastly, my mum has taught me to recognise the power of what is right in front of me. A day is always better when you can acknowledge how lucky you are to have those you love around you.
