Travel Resolutions Everyone Should Follow In 2017

It is still thought that the nomadic way of life is the freest. Exploring terrains, swimming in oceans, crossing borders. It feels incredibly liberating to not know where your next steps will take you. Travelling is one of life’s most enriching luxuries if you open your mind to exploring. This year, make it your mission to see the world from a different perspective, push your boundaries and follow these travel resolutions to create the best memories of your life in 2017…

be spontaneous
travel resolutions

In theory, humans hate spontaneity. The fear of the unknown unearths a caveman-like instinct to run in the opposite direction to safety. In practice, however, being impulsive and taking a leap into the dark can make you feel more alive than ever. Seeing mountains, oceans and deserts you haven’t laid your eyes on before can give you a sense of reincarnation. New surroundings, new you. Even one night away somewhere new helps to change your mindset. Pick a local spot near your home that you haven’t explored before and just go. You can worry about where you’re going to stay when you get there – one night isn’t going to empty your pockets. Breaking your usual weekend routine is healthy to reconnect with the place you live. We usually take it for granted, so make it your goal this year to appreciate what’s on your doorstep. You’ll find it strangely satisfying that you don’t have to travel half way around the world to chase the freedom honeypot that everyone wants to stick their finger into for a taste.

Top Tip
Buy a local map, grab a pencil, close your eyes and randomly place the pencil anywhere on the map. Open your eyes. Mark an ‘x’ on the co-ordinates you landed on, jump in the car and drive – that’s where you’ll be traveling to. Alternatively, write down a list of potential local travel spots. Place them in a bowl on pieces of paper, mix and then pick one out. This will be your destination.

be a local

When a holiday is so far removed from your daily life, it can leave you feeling down and discombobulated on your return. Yes, living in paradise is heavenly, but it isn’t reality. If you’re looking to try something different this year, just go and live some place else. Buy a flight, rent an apartment for a few weeks and blend in with the locals. Shop at the supermarket, go to a local yoga class, become a member at the library. Just simply belong somewhere different for a while. Connecting with a new culture is highly rewarding and will open your eyes to how diverse the universe is. If you’re there for several weeks, you could even get a job in a local cafe to become a real part of the community.

Top Tip
Before you go on your home-away-from-home trip, ensure that you learn the native language to a decent level. This will help you immerse yourself into the environment further, allowing you to converse with locals so you can discover more about what the area has to offer.

be unique

Be your own version of Colombus and travel somewhere off the beaten track. Don’t opt for the tourist-ridden places you’d find on the first page of Google and instead, take time in researching your next holiday to find somewhere extraordinary. Advantageously, these less hyped destinations are likely to be cheaper and quieter. Focusing on the alternative broadens your mindset and your ability to see the world from an entirely different angle. Maybe you’ll find a waterfall hidden inside a lagoon. You may discover the perfect untouched viewing spot on a mountain walk. Whatever you find, your relationship with nature is bound to become more wholesome. Build tracks for people behind you and be a travel pioneer in a world that is fastly turning mainstream. Remember – travel should excite you, not just satisfy you.

Top Tip
Ask older relatives where they traveled to when they were younger. Travel hotspots go out of fashion so it may be that they have some hidden gems hidden under their sleeves. It sounds rather simple, but just looking at a globe can help you discover new places you may not have heard of before – orientating yourself with the earth is no bad thing.
