As we mark the special occasion (yes, we mean National Handbag Day) we’re reflecting on the fascinating history of the Handbag. It’s a journey that spans centuries, reflecting the evolution of not only fashion, but the world.
The concept of carrying your personal belongings dates back to ancient civilizations (Ancient Egyptian hieroglyphics show men carrying pouches around their waists), and began as something predominately worn by men. There soon became a shift in the use of handbags from men to women, as pockets were sewn into men’s clothes more. This shift was a pivotal moment in history, as women gained control of their own belongings, rather than relying on their husband to carry them. The handbag was (perhaps unknowingly) empowering women with privacy and control of their personal items. The modern handbag as we know it began to properly take shape in the late 18th and early 19th centuries as travel by train was introduced, and designs became more tailored to men and women’s needs. This is when new silhouettes like the briefcase were designed, and more feminine handbag shapes were created for women.
It was the 20th century that witnessed a revolution in handbag design, with iconic names like Chanel, Louis Vuitton and Hermes crafting timeless pieces that transcended functionality to become symbols of luxury and style. Iconic handbag moments such as Sex and the City’s “it’s not a bag – it’s a Birkin!” sent the beloved Birkin into the stratosphere – a true turn in the century, not only for Hermes but for the establishment of handbags in society.
