The Design

The design of the Flero is distinctly and classically British, marrying a smart aesthetic with functionality for the refined jet-setter. Handcrafted from the finest full grain, vegetable-tanned leather by master craftsman, this is quality luggage that is to be invested in. As such, it will pair beautifully with any other luxury luggage that you already adore.

As mentioned above the main difference between the small, medium, large and extra large versions of the Flero is their capacity. However, there are design differences for the Flero small. For instance, the Flero small Italian leather luggage bag boasts one main compartment, with a zipped pocket in the lining, that is large enough to accommodate your essentials for an overnight stay. On the exterior there is then a small slip pocket that is ideal for separating out tickets, passports or other slim items as you travel.

The Flero small is then finished with many features that it shares with its larger counterparts, including a dual floor-to-floor YKK zip opening with gusset, metal studs on the base of the bag for protection, and sturdy carry handles. The other versions of the Flero then include the iconic buckle fastenings for security and an adjustable, detachable leather shoulder strap for easy carrying. Accompanied by a 25 year warranty as a testament to the quality of the craftsmanship and materials, the Flero therefore is ideal for the individual traversing the globe for many more years to come.

At Maxwell-Scott, we always work incredibly hard to only source the very finest full grain European cowhides that are then vegetable-tanned and handcrafted by skilled artisans in our Tuscan family-run factory. Deep in the heart of the traditional Italian leather industry, our artisans have honed their craft through a shared knowledge and decades of experience. The distinct craftsmanship and quality materials ensure that each Flero holdall is built to last many more global adventures to come which is why each is accompanied with a 25 year warranty on all manufacturing faults.

‘Full grain’ cowhides refers to the strongest layer of the cowhide which is to say the layer farthest away from the flesh. Its innate durability is derived from the close grain pattern at this top layer which means that the leather wears well for many years and is considered to be highly attractive. With this grain, our leather truly celebrates the natural character of the hide. Moreover, our full grain leather is taken from the saddleback where again the fibres are at their tightest. This is in comparison to the leather taken from the lower portion of the cow which can swell when wet and is often more marked and wrinkled. Therefore, our leather is the most durable option to last many trips traversing the globe.

So as to highlight the natural beauty of this leather it is then vegetable-tanned. This is again an ancient craft based in the traditional Italian leather industry. In fact, we are proud members of the Genuine Italian Vegetable-Tanned Leather Consortium which upholds this tradition that combines an environmentally-friendly process with practices at the vanguard of sustainable thinking. Dyes are extracted from bark including chestnut, quebracho and mimosa trees and imbued into the hide which results in a rich, warm finish. The entire process can take up to 40 days which highlights the patience and skill behind our Classico leather.

Furthermore, as the leather is not chemically sealed, it will develop a stunning patina with use. Patina, in essence, refers to the natural ageing process of the leather and is a hallmark of the finest quality. This desirable sheen is cultivated over time and will map your many adventures as you go – creating luggage that is completely unique to you.

With the Flero’s iconic look, a simple travel ensemble is best. After all, comfort is always key when travelling. Nevertheless, a smart look can easily be maintained by sticking to traditional tones such as creams, greys and french navy. For him, this means a pair of navy chinos paired with soft suede loafers and a relaxed shirt in a matching colour. This can then be finished with a light knit to provide those important layers for aeroplane travel. Quality knitwear is also ideal for her. This Proenza Schouler jumper, in particular, combines a simple sweater with a scarf which provides an effortlessly elegant look. Paired with dark navy culottes and trainers for a contemporary touch, this is the way to dress for practicality with poise. The final choice then: where to travel to next?
