Maxwell Scott Capture Last Moments of Robson and Cooper Leather Shop

In September of this year, we shot our Christmas campaign in the impressive period building of the former Robson and Cooper leather shop. An iconic spot in the heart of York, this leather shop had been open to the public for the past 170 years, finally closing its doors in early 2016. With four floors of history to capture and a legendary leather institution to honour, this shoot was particularly momentous.

Founded as a saddlery and harness makers in 1840 by saddler Matthew Cooper, his leather business moved to its signature shop on Lendal in 1911 when he joined forces with his former apprentice, Mr Thomas Robson. Robson & Cooper offered their handcrafted leather equipment to the cavalry regiment during World War I. Their impeccable craft even attracted royalty, with Queen Victoria’s son, Prince Arthur, their most prestigious customer.

“It was such a privilege to shoot in such a renowned building in the heart of York. Capturing a space that had become lost in time felt incredibly special.” – Jon Cotton, Photographer.

With decades worth of paint crumbling off the walls and wooden floorboards now jaggedly unaligned, this space offered a natural rawness only found in places bearing real history. Juxtaposed against the opulent styling of the models and our luxurious leather bags, the MSB team’s vision came to life. A tale of oxymoronic elements – worn and polished, shabby and elegant. Both exuded beauty, but in very different forms – colliding together to create something truly formidable.

Floor length gowns by Molly Brown’s and evening suits by Guards 1843 injected a lavish and elegant aesthetic. Finishing touches to the men’s styling were made with monk strap shoes and silk pocket squares by JulesB, silver cufflinks by ChrisElli and tailored white shirts by Hawkins & Shepherd. For the women’s styling, makeup by Claire Dickinson blended sultry tones with glamorous elements. Hair was perfectly executed by the infamous Bang Hair York.

“We wanted this year’s Christmas campaign to encapsulate our York roots and long-established vision to safeguard leather craftsmanship. Having the opportunity to honour York’s most iconic leather shop through this campaign was a dream come true for us. It gave the photoshoot real poignancy.” – Julia, Marketing Manager.
