The UK’s leading meditation teacher Will Williams explains how best to use meditation to succeed in life and business…
From celebrities to MPs, royalty to CEOs, William has taught many how to practice meditation on a daily basis. With this, he champions the benefits of meditation which range from stress relief, to productivity, to managing relationships. He has taught thousands of everyday people to meditate with astounding results. A former music industry executive and insomnia sufferer, Will discovered meditation after he used it to cure his own chronic insomnia. His meditation expertise are based on over 11 years’ experience training with renowned meditation masters across the globe. Now, he teaches classes and courses from his Beeja HQ in London and runs regular weekend retreats across the UK. Will leads a team of Beeja meditation teachers worldwide, and will be opening new centres in Berlin, New York, San Francisco and Los Angeles this year.
He has also founded World Meditation Day and, this year, will be launching the new BEEJA meditation app. Will is also working with the OECD to introduce meditation to all primary and secondary schools globally by 2030, with a trial initiative rolling out in 2020, with 20 schools in the UK expected to take part. Safe to say, mediation with Will is inspiring, healing and powerful.
What is meditation and can you explain your Beeja technique?
Different schools of thought may have slightly different variations on the definition of meditation, but the ancients generally considered it to be a an eyes closed practise whereby you do a technique that helps you achieve a peak performance state from which you can then live your life more fully.
The Beeja technique involves giving each person a customised sound which, when they repeat it effortlessly within the mind, will resonate with their nervous system in a way that helps them defrag the hard drive of their nervous system. This way they can move towards more peak performance capability, and ultimately, a happier, healthier state.
What are the key benefits of meditation?
What I see in the people we’ve taught are the following: vastly improved sleep, more energy, better focus, greater resilience to stress, more creativity (including problem solving), significantly enhanced productivity, and all round better relationships where people tend to have more empathy and compassion, instead of irritability, frustration, and grumpiness that so often passes between us.
Can meditation help business success personally and within a team?
Hugely! If someone isn’t happy, or they are distracted by emotion, they cannot focus, they will struggle to innovate in a high end way, and they will be a drag on morale and productivity. When they feel like they are thriving, they become a true asset to the business and they tend to have a very positive, high energy impact on their team.
How can meditation help you to deal with work-related stress?
Stress comes from over-activation of the amygdala in the brain, and results in activation of our nervous system in a way that causes us to react with fear, aggression, anxiety or withdrawal. Meditation helps to calm the amygdala, lower the release of cortisol, and balance out the activation of the nervous system, so that we can achieve high performance in a sustained way, and simultaneously feel good while we do so.
Can meditation help workplace relationships?
Meditation is incredible for improving relationships, because it helps you to become less reactive and more emotionally intelligent. This means that you can have a healthy level of communication with all your colleagues. Plus, the reduced stress dynamics mean that people work together far more easily.
How can meditation be implemented on a daily basis into busy lives?
Firstly, meditation makes you far more productive, meaning you have more time, not less. Secondly, the meditation we teach can be done on the tube, train, bus, plane, and just about anywhere you can think of. So it means you can opportunistically sneak it into your day, without any dramas.
We know that having a good night’s sleep can help you maximize each day, how can meditation benefit sleep?
Scientifically the meditation we teach has been shown to increase sleep, lengthen sleep cycles and increase sleep efficiency. It is able to do this by calming the nervous system down so that you can settle into restful deep sleep, rather than the poor quality sleep most of us now experience.
Can meditation help to increase job satisfaction?
Yes, most of our dissatisfaction with work actually stems from a sense of dissatisfaction with ourselves, and a sense that we are lacking somehow. By tuning you into the the deeper you that resides beyond the facades, there tends to be a sense of belonging that wasn’t there previously. And by helping you become more creative, more productive and more friendly, meditation enables you to find more joy in everything that you do, and you feel less like blaming external factors for your malaise.
What are your 3 tips for beginners starting to learn how to meditate?
1. Choose a practice that doesn’t require focus. That is better for monks on mountain tops.
2. Find an experienced teacher to work with if you can, so they can help you fast track to good practise.
3. Give it 2 months of regular practise, so your brain can adequately re-wire itself and you can enjoy the benefits.
